Tourist Visa
A tourist visa is issued to foreigners visiting Vietnam solely for tourism purposes and not for work.
Depending on the length of stay and number of entries, Vietnam’s tourist visas are categorized as follows:
- 30-day single entry visa
- 30-day multiple entry visa
- 90-day single entry visa
- 90-day multiple entry visa
Currently, there are two ways to apply for a tourist visa to Vietnam:
- Apply for a Vietnam e-visa (this is the simplest way to obtain a tourist visa and is available to citizens of all countries worldwide).
- Apply for a visa on arrival (VOA). This is an expedited visa option for travelers.
Business Visa
The second most common type of visa is the business visa, also known as the commercial visa. According to new regulations, this type of visa is divided into two categories:
- DN1 Visa: Issued to foreigners working with businesses or organizations that have legal status under Vietnamese law.
- DN2 Visa: Issued to foreigners entering Vietnam to offer services, establish a commercial presence, or conduct other activities following international treaties of which Vietnam is a member.
Similar to tourist visas, Vietnam’s business visas are classified into four types based on the duration of stay and number of entries:
- 1-month single entry visa
- 1-month multiple entry visa
- 3-month single entry visa
- 3-month multiple entry visa
Currently, there are two ways to apply for a business visa to Vietnam:
- Apply for a visa on arrival (VOA). This is the optimal method for foreigners arriving in Vietnam by air who wish to extend their visa while staying in Vietnam or convert to a work visa to apply for a work permit.
- Apply for a Vietnam e-visa. This type of visa cannot be extended while in Vietnam.
Student Visa
The Vietnam student visa is issued to foreigners visiting Vietnam for study purposes.
Typically, you will obtain this type of visa after arriving in Vietnam. You can enter Vietnam on a tourist visa and then apply to change your visa status at the Vietnam Immigration Department after registering for a course. The simplest way to apply for a visa to Vietnam is to use the services of a licensed visa application company.
Work Visa
The work visa for foreigners in Vietnam is categorized as LĐ1 and LĐ2, with a maximum validity of two years.
- LĐ1 Visa: Issued to foreigners working in Vietnam who are exempt from needing a work permit, except in cases where international treaties to which Vietnam is a party stipulate otherwise.
- LĐ2 Visa: Issued to foreigners working in Vietnam who are required to have a work permit.
How to Apply for a Work Visa in Vietnam
To apply for a work visa in Vietnam:
- You must ask the company in Vietnam that you will be working for to request a visa approval letter from the Vietnam Immigration Department.
- Depending on the type of visa approval letter, you will either go to the Vietnamese representative office abroad or arrive at a Vietnamese airport to affix the visa stamp in your passport.
Note:
- The most important document for applying for a work visa in Vietnam is the work permit or a letter confirming exemption from the work permit requirement. If you wish to apply for this type of visa without having a work permit or exemption letter, you should first apply for a commercial visa, with the sponsoring company being the one you will work for. After obtaining the work permit, you can then apply for the work visa.
- Generally, you are not required to submit a criminal record check or a health certificate when applying for a work visa in Vietnam.
- When applying for a work visa in Vietnam, you will need to pay two basic fees: the visa approval letter fee and the stamping fee at the embassy or airport.
